Segregation in the World

Hello everyone... this week in class we discussed Civil Rights, Segregation, and the Montgomery Bus Boycotts.  We saw how Rosa Parks stood up for what she believed in and refused to give up her seat to a white person.  People have been doing things to show what they believe in all over the world.  Look at the pictures and video below.  Each picture and video shows how people have done something to express what they believe in.   You might think some are good and some are bad.

This is a young man in South Africa during Apartheid.  He is riding a "white-only" bus to stand up against apartheid.

This is Thích Quảng Đức, who was protesting the persecution of Buddhists by South Vietnam's Roman Catholic government.  He burned himself alive to make the world know about the South Vietnam government.

This is the Sea Shepard.  It is attacking a Japanese whaling ship because it believes that the Japanese should not kill whales.

This is a song protesting the use of nuclear power in Japan.

Today's question:  Which of the above do you think are good and which do you think are bad?  Why or why not?  Which do you think are most effective? Why or why not?

Please remember, everyone has a right to express their opinion.  Please respect other's opinions.  You must learn how to respectively argue.

  1. Hell,Huskey.I`m eating a peach and doing my homework that u gave to us.Before that class .I`m already known the racial discrimination. Now,I am seeing the picture on the top of your blog. The blacks must give the seat to the whites on the bus.I think it`s not equitable.Blacks also the humen so they have their rights. They can agree and refuse.
We are born into an unfair world. The differences between each and single one of us are obvious. There are whites, blacks, male, female, rich and the poor. However no matter the differences, discrimination is wrong. Many countries in this world still exist prejudices for certain group of people. They feel that woman belong to a lower class than man. Blacks are inferior to whites. All these assumptions are wrong. In many areas, woman are stronger than man. In terms of sports and games, blacks are definitely stronger than whites. As long as we change these wrong perceptions, this world will become a fairer one.

  2. Firstly,I think the song is good because Japan was attacked by huge earthquake,as a result we had many bad things. So we have remembered alldays by the song.
secondly,a young man in South Africa during Apartheid. He is riding a "white-only" bus to stand up against apartheid. This problem is too bad.We was born equalty world, however we are living unfer world now.we can all things, take a bus, eating runch. We have human rights so,this problem is bad.
    The end.

  3. Hello Huskey!
Standing up for what you believe in is a good thing to do. You have the ability to know the difference between right and wrong and you have the courage to face the criticism of society.
My opinion for the first picture is that I salute him. Honestly speaking, though I said "no." during our last class when you asked us if we will give our seat for a white man, I can't really tell if I will still do it if it really happens to me. It's easy to say when you're not really in that scenario that's why I salute him for his bravery. It's hard to fight for what you think is right at first especially if you're alone and there are lots of people will ignore you or even degrade you but this man, he didn't think about it. He didn't think what will happen to him after his action. All he could think about was standing up for his fellow blacks and that they might join him in his protest and I think it was a good thing.
For the second photo, like what I said a while ago, it is good to fight for what you think is right but i don't know if self immolation is a good way of protesting against something. Yes, you are brave to risk your own life for the sake of your fellowmen but what if after doing that kind of sacrifice nothing happened, nothing changed about how they treat them or your religion. Though his action helped the people to open their mind i still find it so horrifying. Maybe you can do it if there's really no other choice.
For the last photo, actually, I don't know about this sea shepherd thing. As I researched about it, I learned that it is a non-profit, marine conservation organization that uses direct action tactics to protect marine life. It is a good thing to conserve everything in this world, not just the marine life. In this case, you said that they are attacking a Japanese whaling ship. Can't they just do it in a peaceful way. I mean why don't they just talk first and then if those Japanese really don't want to stop doing it then they can take the action of attacking them. When you stop something by not doing it in a peaceful way, it may affect the relation of the 2 countries.
For the three photos, I think the most effective is the first photo. Nowadays, I think those nonviolent methods of action have been a powerful tool to achieve social or political change.
For the video, i din't understand all of it but as you said, it's a song protesting the use of nuclear power in Japan. As I watched it I think it's one of the effective protest methods. It's like telling the whole society of Japan or even the world that nuclear power will not do good things in our lives just like what happened last year.
We are living in an unfair world but it doesn't mean that it's bad to change something for a good cause, for a good future. Nothing is permanent in this world except change, and this change will happen if we fight for it.

    1. Hello Huskey. I comment about the fourth animation. I think this animation is not bad. Because I think that it is good to convey one's opinion with a song. But I think that the content of the song is not so good. Because the song says only that object to nuclear power plant. It does not say ''Why do you object?'' and ''What do you do when lose the nuclear power plant?''. I think that the nuclear power plant is dangerous. But we used it so far, so I do not think that there must not be it. And if there is not nuclear power plant, Japan must improve a technique of other generation, I think.
I thought it is good idea to convey one's opinion with a song and I want to look for other method of how to convey one's opinion.

  4. Hi,Huskey.
I read this article carefully. For the first picture,I admire his courage, but did not approve of his actions. If the white people on the bus were angry, what will he want to do? On abuse is back or silence. Now,the racial discrimination to still exist. We can only do our best, in safety.
The second picture,I'm completely against his behavior. What I didn't know much about content, but any kind of delusion sacrifice yourself can solve programs are wrong. In the die and while alive do more, I clearly support the latter.
I don't know third photos of the story also can not find. But there is no peace settlement method?
Strength in numbers. It's all been praised. Why not do it for the programs?I hope to violence to solve problems, are we really cornered.
For the video, use simple words to express their opposition to the use of nuclear. But why not to use nuclear safety? World development is inseparable from the nucleus, we can correct use of nuclear to the service of humanity.
If you talk a lot but do nothing everything can't be true, in order to world for mankind, we start from.

  5. I can not agree with SEA SHEPARDS.Their action is strange.
They are kill many animals to eat.It is not bad.Because I can not live without meats.
But they are angry to kill only sea animals.
WHY?I can not understand their actions.
And their action is really dangerous.
SEA SHEPARDS collision with Japanese whaling ship to intentional.
It is really bad. That damage is very big.
That is not good for each other.

    I researched about SEA SHEPARDs.
They have a really good eager.I agree with their opinion.
But they should be more safety and peaceful.
They were used a dangerous laser beam and petrol bomb.
    It is too dangerous.
I do not want to SEA SHEPARDs will be like a terrorist.

Also Japanese whaling ship should be decrease kill whales numbers.
This problem is not easy.Because they have a justice each other.
I hoping SEA SHEPARDs problem brought to a peaceful settlement.

  6. Hello,Huskey.
First picture,I think it isn`t good.Because if it was protest, but I was done same activiy(racial discrimination)...I felt detest.
I looked second picture.I was suprised. Then I think people have believe of free.People can believe something isn`t but.
And this movie is good.Because they told us the message sing a song. The words are straight and I could understood message that they wanted to tell.
So I read this blog, I felt we can`t make a wall of discrimination.

  7. Hello Huskey!I saw the video.I think this video is good because Japan has a lot of big damage.Because there is the nuclear accident by earthquake. There are Reputational damages and prohibited areas by the nuclear accident. But I think this song's lyrics is not good.Because this song's lyrics is only "Let's eliminate the nuclear power plant!!".I think it is nothing. So I think we have to think about other electric resources.
    That's all.Thank you.

  8. Hello,Huskey.
     First,Ithink Sea Shepard is bad.
Because they act of violence against japanese whaling ship.
    They should refuse in word.
     Second,Iwas surprised at second picture.
Iknew such a way for the first time.Icannot agree it.
    because life is important.
     Third, this song is effective.
Because the song is easy to understand for everyone, but the
words to a song is not good.It is only bad side the nuclear power. The nuclear power is terrible, but we are helped by it

    Thank you. by Akari

Third picture I think they have my own opinions.adhere to their own right
For the video I donnot understand whats meaning.but i think this song is very pleasant to hear.

  10. (typed by Huskey from Yukino's paper)

I think 1st picture is good, because he may be arrested by the policemen but he didn't give one's seat to a white. I think he is very courageous. I can't behave like him.
